The Sea Glass in Fort Bragg has created the richest marine environment in at least northern California. This is because as the glass and terracotta shards dissolve in the salt water, they release the minerals used to make, clarify and color them, and those minerals form the basis of the food chain. You can read more about that in this paper. Capt. Cass is advocating the creation of glass reefs on all our badly depleted continental shelves to reestablish food chains, and wants to see a full time research facility in Fort Bragg, with an aquarium highlighting Fort Bragg's rich diversity of life that would support the facility, to promote the creation of those reefs.
